Teachers Day
Teachers' Day is a festival established to thank teachers for their contributions to the education cause. China's Teachers' Day is set on September 10th every year. Respecting teachers and valuing education is a fine tradition in China, and Teachers' Day reflects the country's respect for teachers and emphasis on the education cause. On January 21, 1985, the Ninth Session of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress decided that September 10th of each year would be China's Teachers' Day. September 10th was chosen because the new school year begins, and students embark on a new journey of respecting teachers and valuing education. The establishment of Teachers' Day aims to affirm teachers' contributions to the education cause, improve teachers' social status, and create a good social custom of respecting teachers and valuing education in the whole society. Every Teachers' Day, students express gratitude and blessings to teachers, all sectors of society honor outstanding teachers, promote teacher ethics and conduct, and inspire teachers to work hard to cultivate socialist builders and successors.
China has had a tradition of respecting teachers and valuing education since ancient times. "Heaven, Earth, Sovereign, Parents, Teachers" are the five major ethical relationships in traditional Chinese culture, and teachers hold a lofty status. Confucius is revered as the "Model Teacher for All Ages," and there have been exemplary models of respecting teachers throughout the dynasties. In modern times, the establishment of China's Teachers' Day has gone through several stages. In 1931, educators Tai Shuangqiu, Cheng Qibao and others contacted education circles in Beijing and Shanghai and held a gathering at Central University in Nanjing, issued a declaration calling for improvement of teachers' treatment, protection of teachers' work, and enhancement of teachers' cultivation, and agreed upon June 6th as Teachers' Day. In 1939, the Nationalist Government's Ministry of Education decided to designate Confucius' birthday, August 27th, as Teachers' Day. After the founding of New China, in 1951, the Ministry of Education and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions announced that "May 1st International Labor Day" would also be "Teachers' Day," but it was not widely recognized. On January 21, 1985, the Ninth Session of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress officially decided that September 10th of each year would be China's Teachers' Day. This day was chosen considering that the new school year begins, teachers and students have a new beginning, making it convenient for students to express gratitude to teachers on the festival. At the same time, there are few national festivals in September, making it convenient for all parties to concentrate time to organize activities and highlight publicity and reporting, promoting the formation of a good social custom of respecting teachers and valuing education, respecting knowledge, and respecting talents nationwide.
