Arbor Day
Arbor Day is a festival designated by law to promote tree protection and mobilize the masses to actively participate in tree planting and afforestation activities. China's Arbor Day is set on March 12th every year, which is also the anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's death. Dr. Sun Yat-sen attached great importance to forestry construction during his lifetime. In 1979, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress designated March 12th as China's Arbor Day to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen and to mobilize the people of the country to actively plant trees, green the motherland, improve the environment, and benefit future generations. Arbor Day embodies the Chinese people's emphasis on forest resources and determination to protect the ecological environment. It is an important carrier for building ecological civilization and Beautiful China. Every year on this day, tree planting activities in various forms are carried out across the country, spreading green and sowing hope.
Ancient China had a tradition of tree planting. The "Book of Rites" records "In the first month of spring, great virtue is in wood," meaning that spring is when all things grow and is a good time for planting trees. Many famous people in ancient times advocated tree planting. For example, Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi said "I planted two pine trees by hand, treating them as honored guests." The establishment of modern China's Arbor Day is closely related to Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Dr. Sun Yat-sen was the first person in modern China to realize the value of forests and advocate tree planting and afforestation. In 1915, at Dr. Sun Yat-sen's initiative, the then Beiyang Government designated Qingming Festival as Arbor Day, but it was later changed to March 12th because Qingming customs varied in different regions. On March 12, 1925, Dr. Sun Yat-sen passed away in Beijing. In 1928, to commemorate the third anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's death, the Nationalist Government held a tree planting ceremony. In February 1979, the Sixth Session of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress decided, based on a proposal from the State Council, that March 12th of each year would be China's Arbor Day, to encourage people of all ethnic groups across the country to plant trees, green the motherland, improve the environment, and benefit future generations. March 12th was chosen as Arbor Day for two reasons: first, to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and second, because this time is after the Awakening of Insects and before the Spring Equinox, when spring returns to most parts of the country, making it the best time for tree planting.
