Christmas

Christmas Day, also known as the Nativity or Jesus' Birthday, is an important Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus, celebrated on December 25th each year. Originally the most important religious festival and family reunion day in Western countries, Christmas has now become a global cultural phenomenon. In China, although Christmas is not a legal holiday or traditional festival, with reform and opening up and deeper cultural exchanges, Christmas has become increasingly popular in China, especially among young people. Many shopping malls, restaurants, and hotels decorate with Christmas themes and launch Christmas-themed activities and promotions. Young people exchange gifts, gather to celebrate, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. In China, Christmas is more of a Western cultural experience and commercial holiday rather than a religious festival. It provides people with opportunities to learn about Western culture, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and strengthen friendships and family bonds.

Christmas originates from Christianity and is a holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, Jesus' mother Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit and gave birth to Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem. Jesus is regarded by Christians as the Son of God and the savior of mankind. Regarding the exact date of Jesus' birth, the Bible does not clearly record it. The early Christian church chose December 25th as Christmas, either to counter the pagan festival 'Birthday of the Unconquered Sun' during the winter solstice in the Roman Empire and transform it into a Christian holiday, or because December 25th was the winter solstice in the Roman calendar, symbolizing light overcoming darkness, fitting Jesus' meaning as the 'Light of the World.' In 336 AD, the Roman Church officially established December 25th as Christmas. With the spread of Christianity, Christmas gradually became one of the most important holidays in the Western world. During the Middle Ages, Christmas was mainly religious celebrations such as mass and prayers. After the Renaissance, secular Christmas celebrations increased, such as family gatherings, gift-giving, and decorating Christmas trees. In the 19th century, many modern Christmas customs took shape, such as the popularization of the Santa Claus image and the popularity of Christmas cards. Since the 20th century, Christmas has spread worldwide with globalization, becoming a global festival transcending religious and cultural boundaries.
