Laba Festival

Laba Festival, celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, is a traditional Chinese folk festival. "La" refers to the twelfth lunar month, and "ba" means eight - hence Laba Festival. This festival originated from ancient year-end sacrifices to deities and ancestors, praying for harvest, good fortune and family prosperity in the coming year. The most representative Laba Festival custom is eating Laba porridge, a practice with over a thousand years of history. Laba porridge is made by cooking grains and dried fruits together, symbolizing abundant harvest and family reunion. The Laba Festival marks the beginning of New Year preparations - after Laba, people begin preparing for the Spring Festival, with a saying "after Laba comes the New Year." Laba Festival not only has profound cultural significance but is also an important moment in the traditional Chinese agricultural calendar, reflecting the farming people's gratitude for harvest and longing for a beautiful life.

Laba Festival originated from ancient year-end sacrifices, with a very long history. During the Xia Dynasty, the twelfth lunar month sacrifice was called "Jia Ping"; during the Shang Dynasty it was called "Qing Si"; during the Zhou Dynasty it was called "La." The "La" sacrifice was an ancient year-end ritual to worship ancestors, the Eight Valley Gods, and deities, praying for abundant harvest and family prosperity in the coming year. The term "La" has multiple meanings: first, "La" means "接" (welcome), welcoming the new and bidding farewell to the old; second, "La" means "猎" (hunt), meaning hunting animals for ancestor worship; third, "La" means "腊" (dried meat), referring to making preserved meat from hunted animals for sacrifice. "Laba" is the climax of the "La" sacrifice, so the eighth day of the twelfth month is called "Laba." After Buddhism was introduced to China, Laba Festival was given new connotations. Legend says the eighth day of the twelfth month is Buddha Shakyamuni's enlightenment day; Buddhist temples would cook fragrant porridge on this day to offer to Buddha, later spreading to the folk, evolving into the custom of eating Laba porridge. During the Song Dynasty, the custom of eating Laba porridge was very popular. "Tokyo Menghua Lu" records: "On the eighth day of this month, temples call it Laba. Major temples send seven-treasure five-flavor porridge, called Laba porridge." During the Qing Dynasty, Laba Festival customs were further enriched, with the Qing court also distributing Laba porridge, making it an important festival. In the folk, besides eating Laba porridge, there were also customs like making Laba garlic and Laba tofu. Laba Festival has a history of over a thousand years and has become one of the important traditional Chinese festivals.
