Easter
Easter is an important religious holiday in Christianity commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and one of the oldest and most significant festivals in the West. Easter's date is not fixed; it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, typically between March 22nd and April 25th. The name Easter comes from the story of Jesus' resurrection: according to the Bible, Jesus was crucified, and miraculously rose from the dead on the third day, symbolizing life's victory over death and light's triumph over darkness. Easter is not only a religious festival but also a celebration of spring's arrival and nature's renewal. Eggs and rabbits are Easter symbols - decorated eggs represent new life and hope, while rabbits symbolize fertility and vitality. During Easter, Western countries hold various celebrations such as church services, egg hunts, and family dinners.
Easter originates from the resurrection event of Jesus Christ. According to the New Testament of the Bible, after being betrayed by Judas, Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. On Good Friday, Jesus was crucified and buried in a tomb. On the third day, Sunday morning, several women went to the tomb and found it empty. An angel told them that Jesus had risen from the dead. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and ascended to heaven forty days later. Jesus' resurrection is the core of Christian faith, symbolizing redemption and the hope of eternal life. Early Christians began celebrating Easter annually in spring to commemorate this sacred event. The determination of Easter's date underwent lengthy discussion; the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD finally established the calculation method: the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. This date selection is also related to the Jewish Passover, as Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection occurred during Passover. The English word 'Easter' may derive from the Anglo-Saxon spring goddess 'Eostre,' whose festival was celebrated at the spring equinox and was later absorbed by Christianity.
