Labor Day
International Workers' Day, also known as May Day or Labor Day, is celebrated on May 1st each year. It is a holiday honoring workers and the labor movement worldwide. In China, May Day is a statutory holiday with a three-day break. During this time, people celebrate workers' contributions, rest and relax, and many travel or engage in recreational activities. May Day reflects respect for labor and workers, emphasizing that labor creates value and workers deserve dignity and rights.
International Workers' Day originated from the labor movement in Chicago, United States, in 1886. On May 1, 1886, workers in Chicago staged a massive strike demanding an eight-hour workday. The strike was violently suppressed, resulting in casualties. To commemorate this struggle, the Second International proclaimed May 1st as International Workers' Day in 1889. Since then, workers worldwide have held celebrations and demonstrations on this day, demanding better working conditions and labor rights. China began celebrating May Day in 1920, and after the founding of New China in 1949, May 1st was designated as a statutory holiday.
