Xiaoxue Solar Term

Minor Snow (Xiaoxue) is the 20th solar term among the 24 solar terms and the second solar term of winter, occurring around November 22-23 when the sun reaches 240 degrees celestial longitude. The "Collected Explanations of the Seventy-Two Pentads" states: "In mid-tenth month, rain becomes snow due to cold air pressure, thus solidifying into snow. Minor indicates insufficiency." Minor Snow's arrival means weather grows colder and precipitation gradually increases. Minor Snow is a climate concept representing climatic characteristics during this solar term period. "Minor Snow" reflects weather phenomena—snow is cold weather's product. During Minor Snow, climate isn't yet very cold; though snowfall begins, snow volume is small, hence "minor snow." Solar term Minor Snow and weather forecast "minor snow" have no necessary connection—Minor Snow in solar terms differs from "light snow" in daily weather forecasts. Minor Snow's arrival signifies winter snowfall about to commence. Minor Snow represents climate conditions during this period, while weather forecast "minor snow" refers to relatively light snowfall intensity.
