Dongzhi Solar Term
Winter Solstice (Dongzhi), also called Winter Festival, Sub-Year, or Winter Greeting, is the 22nd solar term among the 24 solar terms and the fourth solar term of winter, occurring around December 21-23 when the sun reaches 270 degrees celestial longitude. On Winter Solstice day, the sun directly illuminates the Tropic of Capricorn, making it the day with shortest daylight and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. After Winter Solstice, the sun's direct point begins moving northward, daylight gradually lengthens, though temperatures continue declining. Winter Solstice represents both an important solar term and traditional Chinese folk festival, with saying "Winter Solstice is as significant as New Year." Ancient people considered Winter Solstice the critical Yin-Yang transformation point—"Winter Solstice, one Yang energy arising"—after which Yang energy begins recovering. Winter Solstice was anciently also called "Sub-Year," with importance second only to New Year. In traditional Chinese culture, Winter Solstice is a day for heaven-ancestor sacrifices and family reunions. Winter Solstice culture in China spans thousands of years, representing precious Chinese national cultural heritage.
