Jingzhe Solar Term

Awakening of Insects (Jingzhe) is the third solar term of the 24 solar terms, occurring around March 5-6 when the sun reaches 345 degrees celestial longitude. The name combines "Jing" (惊, meaning to startle or awaken) and "Zhe" (蛰, referring to hibernating animals). The name was originally "Qizhe" (Initiation of Hibernation) but was changed to "Jingzhe" during the Western Han Dynasty to avoid Emperor Jing's name taboo. During Awakening of Insects, spring thunder begins to sound, temperatures rise, spring vitality intensifies, hibernating insects awaken, and winter-dormant animals begin emerging from underground and resuming activity. All things on earth start stirring, and the spring plowing season begins. Awakening of Insects reflects how natural organisms are influenced by seasonal rhythm changes, exhibiting germination and growth phenomena, making it a solar term that truly reflects natural phenology.
