Mangzhong Solar Term

Grain in Ear (Mangzhong) is the 9th solar term among the 24 solar terms and the third solar term of summer, occurring around June 5-7 annually when the sun reaches 75 degrees celestial longitude. The name "Mangzhong" derives from agricultural activities - "mang" refers to awned grain crops such as rice, millet, and wheat, while "zhong" means sowing. The "Collected Explanations of the Seventy-Two Pentads" records: "Fifth month node, meaning awned grain crops can be sown now." At this time, northern awned crops like wheat have matured, while southern grain crops like late rice are precisely in sowing season. Grain in Ear is a watershed in agricultural production, both a harvest season and a critical planting period. The agricultural proverb "if not planted by Grain in Ear, planting later is futile" profoundly embodies this solar term's importance in agricultural activities. Temperatures rise significantly, rainfall becomes abundant, marking crops' most vigorous growth period.
