Xiaohan Solar Term

Minor Cold (Xiaohan) is the 23rd solar term among the 24 solar terms and the fifth solar term of winter, occurring around January 5-7 when the sun reaches 285 degrees celestial longitude. Minor Cold marks climate entering year's coldest period. As the saying goes, "Minor Cold, Major Cold, freezing into ice balls." Minor Cold period often coincides with "third nine, fourth nine"—year's coldest time. Though called "Minor" Cold, temperatures in many regions actually reach annual minimum during this period. "Minor" relative to following Major Cold, but actual temperatures often differ little or Minor Cold may even be colder. Minor Cold represents winter's deepening, with increasing cold, everything hibernating, vitality concealing. In traditional Chinese culture, Minor Cold is an important solar term marking midwinter arrival and spring approaching. Though climate is harsh, Minor Cold also contains hope for spring's imminent arrival.
