Minor Heat (Xiaoshu) is the 11th solar term among the 24 solar terms and the fifth solar term of summer, occurring around July 6-8 when the sun reaches 105 degrees celestial longitude. "Xiao" (小) means small or minor, while "shu" (暑) means heat - Minor Heat indicates weather beginning to turn hot but hasn't reached the hottest period yet. Minor Heat marks midsummer's official beginning, with most parts of China entering the year's hottest period. Minor Heat coincides with the first fu period - folk sayings state "Minor Heat, Major Heat, steaming above and cooking below," vividly describing this period's extreme heat. Though Minor Heat isn't the year's hottest time, it's immediately followed by Major Heat, the year's hottest solar term - folk sayings note "after Minor Heat passes, each day three degrees hotter." During Minor Heat, high temperatures, high humidity, and abundant precipitation characterize the weather, with crops entering vigorous growth periods - also a critical period for agricultural production.
