Daxue Solar Term

Major Snow (Daxue) is the 21st solar term among the 24 solar terms and the third solar term of winter, occurring around December 6-8 when the sun reaches 255 degrees celestial longitude. The "Collected Explanations of the Seventy-Two Pentads" states: "Major Snow, eleventh month solar term. Major means abundant. By now snow becomes abundant." Major Snow's arrival means weather grows increasingly cold with greater snow possibilities than Minor Snow, though not necessarily indicating large snowfall volume. Like Minor Snow, Rain Water, and Grain Rain, Major Snow directly reflects precipitation. This solar term's arrival indicates significantly declining temperatures and increasing precipitation. Major Snow most commonly brings cooling, rain, or snow. Major Snow represents a climate concept indicating climatic characteristics during this period—temperature and precipitation volume. Weather forecast "major snow" refers to heavy intensity snowfall. Meteorologically, rain-snow weather is termed "precipitation phenomena," classified by intensity as light snow, moderate snow, heavy snow, and blizzard. During Major Snow, except for non-winter zones in South China and southern Yunnan, most Chinese regions have entered winter, with Northeast and Northwest averaging below minus 10°C, and Yellow River basin and North China temperatures stabilizing below 0°C.
