Traditional Chinese Hours

The traditional Chinese time system divides each day into twelve two-hour periods called "shichen," each named after one of the Twelve Earthly Branches and associated with a zodiac animal. This system is deeply integrated with Traditional Chinese Medicine, which maps each period to a specific organ and its peak activity time.

Ancient Chinese physicians made a discovery that modern chronobiology is only now beginning to confirm: the human body runs on a clock. Not the mechanical clock of hours and minutes, but a deep biological rhythm that cycles through twelve phases every twenty-four hours, with each phase activating a different organ system.

They called these phases "shichen" — double hours — and mapped them to the Twelve Earthly Branches, the twelve zodiac animals, and the twelve primary meridians of the body. The result was a unified theory of time that connected the cosmic movements of stars and seasons to the intimate rhythms of breath, digestion, and sleep within every human body.
