Pengzu's Taboos
Peng Zu's Taboos is a set of daily warnings attributed to Peng Zu, a legendary figure said to have lived 800 years. Each day carries two taboos — one linked to the Heavenly Stem and one to the Earthly Branch — creating poetic, rhyming warnings about activities to avoid.
In the misty dawn of Chinese civilization, when the Xia Dynasty gave way to the Shang, there lived a man named Peng Zu whose life stretched across an almost incomprehensible span of eight hundred years. How did he achieve this extraordinary longevity? According to legend, he discovered that each day carries hidden dangers — specific activities that, if performed on the wrong day, invite misfortune, illness, or loss.
He encoded this survival wisdom into a set of rhythmic, four-character warnings — one for each Heavenly Stem and one for each Earthly Branch. These twenty-two rhyming couplets, combined daily into pairs, became the Pengzu Baiji — "Peng Zu's Hundred Taboos" — a poetic survival guide that has echoed through Chinese culture for over two thousand years.
